SAFETY MEETS PERFORMANCE
WHY FIRE TREATMENT IS ESSENTIAL
Compliance, confidence, and peace of mind for every production.
Every performance space — from theatres and schools to galleries and event venues — must meet strict fire safety standards.
Fabric elements like drapes, voiles, scrims, and scenic drops can pose a fire risk if left untreated.
That’s why Reveal offers professional fire retardant (FR) treatment services to ensure your fabrics meet Australian Standards AS1530.2 and AS1530.3.
We treat new and existing fabrics, including those not originally sourced from us, using approved, industry-recognised solutions that preserve the fabric’s colour, texture, and drape quality.
Benefits of FR Treatment:
-
Meets venue and insurance compliance requirements
-
Extends fabric lifespan and maintains performance
-
Reduces the risk of ignition and flame spread
-
Suitable for cotton, polyester, wool, and blends
-
Applied by experienced, trained professionals
At Reveal, safety isn’t just a requirement — it’s part of the design process.

Our Approach
SIMPLE, THOROUGH, RELIABLE
HOW WE TREAT YOUR FABRICS FOR SAFETY AND PERFORMANCE
Our FR process is built on precision, compliance, and care. From first inspection to certification, every step is handled by trained technicians using approved products and proven methods.
-
START WITH A FABRIC CHECK
FABRIC EVALUATION & CONSULTATION
Every great installation starts with understanding your space.
Every project begins with a look at what we’re working with. We assess your fabric’s type, age, and application to choose the most effective fire-retardant solution.
That way, your material is treated properly from the start — not just coated and called compliant. -
CLEAN BEFORE YOU TREAT
PREPARATION & PRE-TREATMENT
Every great finish starts with clean, well-prepared fabric.
We clean and prep fabrics before treatment to remove dust, oils, and surface contaminants that could affect absorption.
This ensures every fibre takes the solution evenly, giving you a consistent finish and reliable fire protection. -
APPLY WITH PRECISION
FLAME RETARDANT APPLICATION
Our approach balances precision with protection.
Our technicians apply approved FR products through immersion or spray, depending on the fabric and project requirements.
Everything is handled in a controlled environment to achieve full, even coverage — no shortcuts, no missed spots. -
TESTED BEFORE IT LEAVES
DRYING & QUALITY CONTROL
No item leaves our workshop without being checked — twice.
Once treated, each fabric is carefully dried and checked to ensure compliance with AS1530.2 and AS1530.3.
We confirm every piece meets the necessary standards before packaging or reinstallation. -
SAFETY THAT LASTS
CERTIFICATION & AFTERCARE
Fire safety doesn’t end once your fabric leaves our workshop.
Every job includes a certificate of treatment for venue and insurance records.
We’ll also recommend when to re-treat your drapes so they stay safe and compliant for years to come.
The Reveal Difference
MORE THAN JUST A TREATMENT
We treat every fabric with the same care we’d give a stage-ready drape — because safety deserves craftsmanship.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does FR treatment actually do?
Fire Retardant (FR) treatment helps slow the spread of flame on stage fabrics. It doesn’t make materials fire-proof, but it adds an important layer of protection so drapes and scenic fabrics comply with Australian fire-safety expectations.
How long does the treatment last?
The effectiveness of FR treatment depends on fabric type, frequency of use, and exposure to moisture or cleaning. As a general rule, drapes should be re-treated every 2 - 3 years —or sooner if they’ve been washed or exposed to humidity.
Can any fabric be fire retardant treated?
Most stage fabrics—including cotton, wool, and polyester—can be treated, though some coated or specialty materials may not absorb the solution evenly. Our team assesses each fabric before treatment and advises on suitability.
Do you test each fabric after treatment?
We visually check every batch for consistency and quality before it leaves our workshop, but formal ignition or compliance testing is carried out only in accredited laboratories (such as AWTA). We can organise independent testing if required.
What standards does Reveal’s treatment meet?
Our process aligns with Australian fire-safety requirements (AS/NZS 1530 Parts 2 and 3). While testing to those parts must be performed in a certified lab, our in-house procedures follow the same quality principles to ensure compliance readiness.
When should drapes be re-treated or replaced?
If drapes have been washed, exposed to moisture, or show visible wear, the protective coating may have weakened. Contact Reveal to arrange an inspection—we’ll assess whether a fresh FR treatment or a replacement is the better option.
Can you treat existing drapes, or only new ones?
We can treat both new and existing drapes. Clients often send in older curtains for re-treatment at the same time as maintenance or repairs to extend their usable life.
