What Do Fire Ratings Actually Mean for Stage Drapes?

Why Fire Ratings Matter
not just a set of codes
Theatre drapes aren’t just a visual element — they’re also a potential fire risk. That’s why Australian venues are required to use fabrics that meet national flame retardancy standards. These ratings exist to slow the spread of flame, reduce smoke, and protect audiences, performers, and your venue.
The Three Main Types
Lets decode the lingo of flame retardant fabrics
Not all fabrics handle fire safety the same way. In Australia, performance drapes need to comply with flame-retardant standards (AS1530.2/3), but there are three main categories you’ll come across:
Inherently Flame Retardant (IFR)
-
Made from fibres that are naturally flame resistant.
-
Protection is built into the thread and never washes out.
-
Ideal for long-term installations in schools, theatres, and venues.
-
Best for: minimal maintenance and maximum peace of mind.
Durable Flame Retardant (DFR)
-
Fabrics are chemically treated during production.
-
Flame resistance survives a set number of washes or cleans.
-
Will eventually require re-treatment to remain compliant.
-
Best for: venues balancing durability with cost.
Non-Durable Flame Retardant (NDFR)
-
Fabrics are treated with a surface coating after weaving.
-
Protection is temporary — it can wash out or wear off.
-
Suitable for short-term events or one-off productions.
-
Best for: temporary use where compliance is still required.
Australia’s Fire Standards
AS1530 Explained
If your drapes are being installed in an Australian venue, they need to comply with AS1530:AS1530.2 – Vertical Burn Test
This is the go-to test for drapes. The fabric is burned vertically to measure how fast it ignites and how much smoke it produces.
- A Flammability Index of 10 or below is the standard for most venues.
- In NZ, it’s even stricter — a Flammability Index of 6 or lower
Wet Drapes?
A Word of Caution
Moisture is the enemy of flame retardancy — especially for NDFR fabrics. If these curtains get damp, the salts in the treatment can crystallise and leave tide marks, reducing effectiveness. If in doubt: retreat before reuse.
