Bringing Moulin Rouge to Life, One Stitch at a Time

 

When Moulin Rouge! The Musical made its grand debut in Melbourne, it wasn’t just the performers that stole the show. Behind the scenes, our team was tasked with manufacturing every single piece of soft goods for the production - from opulent stage drapes to plush upholstery and auditorium décor. It was a monumental job made even more complex by the realities of COVID lockdowns.

The Brief

Big, bold, and beautifully dressed — during a pandemic

 

Reveal was engaged to deliver all soft goods for Moulin Rouge! — and there were a lot. This included stage drapery, soft scenery, upholstered furniture, and full auditorium dressing, with additional requirements for the show’s future touring needs. The timeline was tight, the scale was enormous, and the world was in the midst of a pandemic. The bar for quality was sky-high, and so were the stakes.

With strict lockdowns, curfews, and unpredictable shutdowns across Melbourne, delivering this project required a serious pivot in how we work. Our team adapted quickly:

  • Upholsterers worked from their homes and garages to keep builds progressing

  • Our sewing team maintained output through a stop-start schedule, always keeping quality front of mind

  • We collaborated with the design team in unconventional settings — including the Regent Theatre foyer — to finalise layouts and fabric choices

  • We dealt with fabric sourcing challenges head-on, navigating global freight delays and flight shortages to get the right materials in on time

Despite everything, the Reveal team stayed focused, flexible, and determined.

The Result

A stage — and auditorium — dressed to impress

 

From the ornate red drapes to the custom upholstery and lush auditorium finishes, the soft goods we produced played a key role in capturing the visual world of Moulin Rouge! on stage. Everything was delivered to the highest standards, on time, and with the kind of detail that only comes from a team that cares deeply about the craft.
